IEC 61508;  Covers the international standard for all applications involving protective functions created with the help of electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic devices. The IEC 61508 standard specifies requirements regarding the design, integration, operation, and maintenance of the system in order for a system to provide the required SIL level.

PLC Programming Standards

The IEC 61508 series consists of seven parts:

IEC 61508-1, General requirements
IEC 61508-2, Requirements for systems for protection with the help of electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic devices
IEC 61508-3, Software requirements
IEC 61508-4, Definitions and abbreviations
IEC 61508-5, sample methods for determining the SIL level

Application guidelines of standards IEC 61508-6, IEC 61508-2, and IEC 61508-3
IEC 61508-7, Techniques and measurements overview

IEC 61511 standard specifies functional safety requirements in the process industry. It has been developed on the basis of the IEC 61508 standard. The IEC 61511 standard is used by end-users to ensure system security for the entire life cycle of the system.

The IEC 61511 standard consists of three parts:

IEC 61511-1, Definitions, system, hardware, and software requirements
IEC 61511-2, Application guidelines
IEC 61511-3, Guide to determining the required SIL level

EN 50126 (IEC 62278) standard specifies the RAMS parameters of a railway. The RAMS parameter expresses the Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety degrees in railway applications.

EN 50128 (IEC 62279) standard specifies the technical requirements and procedures for the development of programmable electronic systems used in the control and safety of railways.

EN 50129 (IEC 62425) standard covers the standards related to signaling systems, subsystems, and equipment included in the security units of rail systems. This standard covers the aspects related to the features, design, production, installation, receipt, operation, maintenance, and modifications of all signaling systems.
